Board Member Bios

Kathy Starr Kathy Starr is a graduate of IUP with a B.S. in mathematics and a Master’s in Education. She is a former mathematics teacher in New Ken, Arnold and Kiski Area School Districts. Served on the StrongLand Chamber of Commerce Board for 10 years and chaired the board in 1996. Currently she serves on the board of Kiski Valley Enterprises and the Kiski Area Education Foundation. She is the owner of Five Starr Catering since 1996. Kathy is married to Dick Starr. They have three children and 14 grandchildren. Her hobbies include music and genealogy. Kathy directs the English Handbell Choir at Vandergrift Presbyterian Church and sings in the church choir She also enjoys playing her banjo when time allows. Kathy was born and has lived in Allegheny Township her whole life.
Mike Korns has been an associate professor of Employment and Labor Relations at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) since 2004, teaching graduate courses in contract administration, organizational behavior, labor relations, and human resource management in the public sector. Prior to teaching, Mike spent 24 years in the energy sector working in safety, training, and employment relations. He attained a B.S. in Safety Sciences, an M.A. in Employment and Labor Relations, and a Ph.D. in Administration and Leadership Studies at IUP. Mike has been a member of the IUP University Senate for 15 years and served as chair of its Senate Rules committee for 10 years. He currently serves as vice president and treasurer on the board of directors for the Try Life Center in Lower Burrell.
Ren Steele Ren Steele grew up on the Steele farm on White Cloud Road in Allegheny Township.  His relatives have lived in Allegheny Township since 1824.  Ren graduated from Ohio State University with a B.A. in English Literature.  Moreover, he received a M.Ed. from UCLA.  He is a past President of the Sons of the American Revolution, Pittsburgh Chapter.  Mr. Steele is a playwright and co-founder of Freeport Theatre Festival, a local straw-hat theatre.  In addition, Ren has been a middle school teacher for twenty-three years, mostly with Armstrong School District.  He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
